Press Release September 2010
As a result of her use of the Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure, commonly referred to as LANAP
, Wilmington, NC Periodontist Dr. Phyllis Cook
has identified what she considers to be the benefits of LANAP.
The benefits of LANAP that she has identified are as follows:
At the heart of the matter, the LANAP™
treatment’s ability to build healthy bone and tissue lies at the core of its success, few procedures exist in medicine offer such win-win outcomes. In the case of LANAP™
treatment, patients benefit from both the advanced capabilities of state-of-the-art lasers and the conservative protocol that favors the preservation of natural dentition.
procedure was designed for this very reason. The PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser used to perform it offers two primary benefits. First, its preference for infected tissue and bacteria allows me to destroy only diseased areas while preserving healthy tissue. Second, I am trained in its use to stimulate the regeneration of native tissues.
protocol demonstrates its benefits as a minimally invasive treatment and the relatively easy recovery inspires positive patient response and high rates of compliance.
Evidence-based therapies that offer so many positive outcomes are rare and science is continuing to prove the clinical benefits of the LANAP™
protocol for patients with all stages of gum disease, including the most severe. The consistent reproduction of positive outcomes has me excited to offer this new therapy for my patients.
LANAP offers an alternative to treating gum disease with traditional scalpel and suture surgery. After a patient has been diagnosed with gum disease, the LANAP is used to gently pass between the gum line and the teeth to vaporize disease and leave healthy tissue in its place. LANAP uses a fiber optic that is equivalent in size to about three human hairs. The process uses ultrasonic root debridement to clean root surfaces, followed by a different laser setting to clot the blood so the periodontist gets a good seal, thus eliminating the need to use sutures.
No cutting, no stitches and very minimal tissue removal to reduce pocket depth. This is a bone-building procedure that doesn’t require removing much gum tissue.
Because of the less invasive nature of LANAP, recovery time is reduced and most patients who have the procedure performed at Dr Cook’s Wilmington Periodontal practice require no time off from work or other activities. Patients recovering from the procedure also experience less bleeding, fewer infections and quicker post-op time.
Fear of periodontal treatment vanishes when patients find out no scalpel or sutures will be used.
A less invasive procedure also equates to less pain during treatment. The small laser makes it easier to get in between the gum and the teeth.
LANAP removes the infection that coincides with gum and periodontal disease.
Seldom is there a time when a preferable procedure is cheaper than the traditional option, but that isn’t the case with LANAP, when patients consider the fact that they don’t have to spend as much time in the dental chair. There are not additional fees for bone grafts and membranes.
