Guided Tissue Bone Regeneration in Wilmington, NC

Guided Tissue Regeneration

Periodontal disease causes bone loss around teeth, which can increase the chances for tooth loss. Once a tooth has been lost, the supporting jaw bone will disappear over time. This can make wearing dentures uncomfortable. However, simple techniques are now available to regrow lost bone, provide support for dental implants, or to improve esthetics beneath a fixed bridge.

Guided tissue bone regeneration does not always require the removal of bone from any other part of the body. Instead, many options use membrane barriers, tissue stimulating proteins, or bioactive growth factor gels. Occasionally bone grafting procedures are required; bone grafts can be from your own bone, tissue banks, or synthetic materials. The goal of each of these treatment options is to stimulate the body to grow new bone or to hold the space for the bone to regenerate into.

The Benefits

The bone and gum tissue should fit together like a turtleneck around your neck. But when periodontal disease is present, this supporting tissue and bone is destroyed and pockets in the gums develop. Eventually, if too much bone is lost, the tooth will need to be extracted.

Guided tissue bone regeneration helps the body to regenerate lost bone. By repairing the damage done by periodontal disease, this procedure will increase the chances of keeping your natural teeth and will decrease the odds of serious health problems associated with periodontal disease.

The Emdogain® Gel Advantage

Dr. Deana Cook uses Emdogain® Gel in gum grafting procedures and during periodontal surgery to help stabilize teeth and help improve the outcome of these procedures. Emdogain® Gel works by regenerating the tissue structures that anchor teeth in place. Since it was introduced in 1996, Emdogain® Gel has be safely used in millions of procedures worldwide. Studies continue to show that Emdogain® Gel can increase the predictability of surgical procedures and reduce post-surgical discomfort.

Emdogain® Gel is comprised of proteins that self-assemble to create a matrix. The dominant protein in the matrix, amelogenin, is responsible for tooth development. Because this protein is naturally found in the human body, no allergic or immunologic reactions will occur. Emdogain® Gel is applied topically during the surgery on exposed root surfaces. The protein then helps to rebuild bone and gum structures.

The Excitement About PRGF

PRGF is considered a breakthrough in bone and soft tissue regeneration because it permits the body to take advantage of the normal healing pathways at a greatly accelerated rate. When the body is wounded and needs to heal, many different cells and cell-types are rushed to the site of the injury. These cells initiate the healing process by forming blood clots and releasing growth factors into the wound. The more growth factors that are introduced to the wound, the quicker and more efficiently the body is able to heal.

By introducing PRGF to the surgical area, the body is able to take advantage of a large amount of growth factors without the blood cells. This allows for accelerated healing but without the immune system response of swelling and inflammation. PRGF also has been shown to increase the formation of new bone. By adding PRGF to the surgical site, the doctor can now grow bone more predictably and faster than ever before. This is of great significance when placing dental implants.
